Flattered Friday- Sunshine Blogger Award

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Hannah for nominating me for the Sunshine Blogger Award.  I don’t feel like my blog has been particularly “sun-shiny” recently….It seems more like it has been hiding behind a tree or something!  All the same, it was very sweet of you to nominate me.  And coincidentally, if you all go to Hannah’s blog, you will see that she was nominated by yet another Hannah, so I almost have a secret challenge- to find another Hannah somewhere and nominate her blog!  We’ll see how that goes…. 🙂 Here are the rules-

  1. Thank whoever nominated you(Hannah!)
  2. Answer the questions set for you
  3. Nominate eleven other bloggers and set eleven questions for them

Now to the questions-

1. Do you generally prefer the book or the movie? And why?

I think I normally prefer the book to a movie- there is just so much a movie normally misses!  But, books take longer….so I’m not going to say movies are always a bad thing either. 😉

2. What is one thing you like best about yourself?

Can I just skip this one?  I don’t like to pick favorite qualities about myself- it makes me feel weird.

3. Are there any kinds of foods you will not eat under any circumstances?

I really, REALLY try to avoid mushrooms and fish, but end up eating them sometimes anyway.  Unless I was starving to death, I think that there are a few things I wouldn’t eat under any circumstances like squid, liver, etc.

4. Are you a cat person, dog person, neither, or maybe some other (for example, fish or snake) kind of person?

It’s interesting that you should ask this question, because I happen to be cat-sitting this week!  My family has a couple dogs(I like dogs a lot), but we can’t have a cat because half my family is allergic to them(I am not).  So, I’ve been enjoying my week with these cats and thought maybe when I have my own place, I’d get one that doesn’t shed, because the cat hair EVERYWHERE really gets me down.  Then I had to clean out the litter box.  I’m now having second thoughts about owning a cat in the future, unless it is trained to go outside.  In summary, I would not say I’m any particular type of animal person.

5.When you watch movies in the theatres, do you get popcorn?

My family does sometimes, but I don’t normally eat it.  First of all, I’m not a *huge* fan of popcorn(yes, I am an American, even if I don’t like popcorn!). Secondly, it makes you sooooo thirsty!  I think that’s a tactic of the movie-people to get you to buy over-priced water/soda, but don’t tell them I said that.

6. If you could be instantly fluent in another language, which language would it be?

There are a lot of languages that I would love to just instantly be fluent in, but I think Spanish would probably be the most useful.

7. Do you believe in love at first sight? Why/why not? Or friends at first sight, maybe?

I don’t know, I think I only believe in it to a certain extent because so much of a person(personality, goals, beliefs, etc.) can’t be seen at “first sight”.

8. Are you more of an introvert or extrovert? Or introverted extrovert or extroverted introvert?

Good question!  I am trying to become an extroverted introvert, but it’s a slow process…..

9. Do you like smoothies?

Not really.

10.How about milkshakes?

Yes!!! Especially any type of chocolate milkshake.

11. If you could meet a younger version of yourself, what would you tell them?

I would try to convince my younger self that it’s not so scary to be a little more outgoing, and to actually talk to people.  They aren’t really that scary, in fact most of them are quite nice! 😀  But, I probably wouldn’t succeed in convincing myself-  I was painfully introverted. :/

Now that you made it through all those questions, here are my nominees-

Hannah  Haha!  Yes! I found another Hannah. =D And….

Anna!  I just feel all over it today- I found a Hannah AND an Anna.

Those are all great blogs(very sun-shiny too) so check them out if you have the time!

And to all the bloggers mentioned above, here are your questions!

  1. What is your perfect day, weather-wise?  Sun-shiny?  Stormy?  A little bit of both?
  2. If you are feeling down, what do you do to make yourself feel better?
  3. Do you ever go through dry spells with blogging?  Please tell me that I’m not the only one….
  4. What was the last book you read?
  5. Are you the type of person to strike up a conversation with a stranger?
  6. If a stranger strikes up a conversation with you, what is your first thought?  Is it “Hey, a new friend!  I’m so happy right now!”  Or “Why me???”  Or none of the above?
  7. Did you go on vacation over the summer?  If so, where did you go?  If not, we have something in common. 😉
  8. Are you a big city person?  Or a rural country person?  Or a small town person?
  9. Blue or red?
  10. Are you a tall person, a short person, or somewhere in between?
  11. Why are there 11 questions?  Why couldn’t it be 10?  10 is such a nice number.  What is your favorite number?

So….there.  Now I have a solar-powered blog post. I hope you are having a great week, and thanks for stopping by!

Colonel Mustard or Miss Peacock….

Thankfully, there was no murder as there typically is in the case of ‘Clue’. However, there was a mysterious disappearance of our food. It was the sweets that we had baked the night before, and left on the dining room table.

The only time it was really mysterious was the first time.  My dad and I got up at at 6:30 to go to work, so nobody else was up at the time.  Both of us noticed as we passed through the kitchen that the pile of sugar cookies(like 100 cookies….it was a pretty big pile!) that had been made the night before had significantly decreased, in a rather strange way.  My mom deals with insomnia sometimes, so we thought she must have gotten up in the night, and decided to do something with them.  It seemed like a logical conclusion at the time.

When my mom woke up, she thought we had done something with them.  Hm….Well, there goes our theory.

After some examining, my mom found cookie crumbs on the floor pretty much everywhere (that doesn’t say a whole lot for my observance skills!).  Our English Mastiff, Buttercup, had consumed all those cookies!  Surprisingly, she didn’t seem to have even a bellyache, let alone other effects that I’d rather not go into…. She just laid there, innocently looking up at us from the doggie mat as if she hadn’t done anything.  She ONLY ate fifty 6-inch diameter cookies!!!

In her defense, they had been left on the corner of the dining room table.  And we had(notice- that is no longer a practice of ours) been leaving her out on her mat instead of putting her in the kennel, because she loves her mat.  Our Lab, on the other hand, loves her kennel.  To each their fuzzy own!

A couple weeks later, when we had forgotten to have Buttercup go to her kennel, my dad and I woke up to the few(and I mean few) remains of 7 double-chocolate banana muffins that had been in the *middle* of the dining room table.  The tablecloth was just slightly messed up from her exertions to get the muffins, if you can imagine.  Sigh….We were a little more concerned about her health because chocolate is really NOT good for dogs….and she got some of the muffin cups mixed up with the muffins and ate those too.  But this dog has an apparently strong stomach!

Now, we tease her about getting big hips(the mental picture is rather amusing, is it not?), and keep anything tasty off the dining room table!  Lessons learned….hopefully.

Just to bring my almost non-existent ‘Clue’ theme to an end….It was Buttercup, in the dining room, with….her mouth.

I hope you are having a lovely day, thanks for reading!

Making Cookies!

I made cookies.  From scratch.  Before you start picturing just plain chocolate chip cookies, remember to include some oatmeal bits in your imagination!  That is the type of cookies I make- chocolate chip *oatmeal* cookies.  It makes them slightly healthier, right?  Adds a little protein, and other healthy thingys.  It doesn’t affect the flavor a whole bunch, but I’ve never done a side-by-side comparison either.  Feel free to try it yourself and let me know how they compare!  ***Make sure both are homemade- comparing store-bought and homemade would be like comparing….um….. something that isn’t very comparable.  FYI, I am not good at making up examples.

Pros of homemade

Warmmmmm Cooooookies……….  They are SO good.  There are probably some really fancy hoity-toity desserts out there (that all require refrigeration!) that blow chocolate chip cookies out of the water, but a fresh-baked cookie is hard to beat in my book.  The warm, slightly crunchy-gooey cookie part, with the hot, melted chocolate chips.  Melt in your mouth type.  Good luck getting that from ‘Chips Ahoy!’.

Homemade cookies are probably healthier than your average store-bought cookie.  AND, you know exactly what you put in them!  I don’t know about you, but sometimes I speculate on exactly who or what has touched what I am putting in my mouth….

You can stick them in adorable cookie jars!  Not that we have one, I just thought I’d throw that out there.  Well, you can do that with store-bought cookies too….maybe this will just be a neutral point. 😉

Cons of homemade

Fingers are *not* in the recipe, and yet they always find their way into my cookie dough.  Mind you, they are not MY fingers…The cookie dough is minding it’s own business in the bowl where I left it, when some passerby decides that warm cookies just can’t come fast enough- so they swipe some dough while I am turned around.

Another con of homemade is that they are hard to stop eating, but the same can be said of store-bought. 😉  Those are the only cons I can think of.  Oh!  Nope, there is another.  It is far more time-consuming to make your own cookies, rather than pick up a package at the grocery store.  True dat.

Homemade cookies also don’t come with a container- you have to get your own, and try to fit all the cookies in it properly.  Sigh…. And if they don’t all fit, you just have to eat the extras!

Pros of store-bought

Store-bought cookies still taste good.  I’m not shooting down the poor little cookies that were mass-produced.  They get plenty of love too. 🙂  I have only one met one type of cookie that I do not enjoy getting acquainted with- oatmeal raisin.  Since I make chocolate chip oatmeal, it’s perfectly logical of you to assume that it is the raisin that I discriminate against. You would be right.  I do NOT  like raisins.  Anywhere or anytime.  I am an equal-opportunity raisin-disliker.  It’s a texture thing.

Another pro is that purchasing cookies, instead of making your own, is potentially cheaper.  I’ve never done a comparison.  So I don’t know.  But it seems like making your own of almost anything costs more.  Thanks for encouraging do-it-yourself-ness!

Cons of store-bought

If you give cookies to someone, it’s a much more personal gift if you make them yourself.  Like I said earlier, a cookie is a cookie- most all of them are yummy.  But still, it means a little bit more when you can say, “Here, I made these for you!”, rather than “Here, I went to the grocery store and picked these up for you”.  I’m having a hard time exactly phrasing the difference, but it’s there…. whatever it is.  At least that’s how I’m hoping my brother feels about it when a certain package filled with enough sugary stuff to rot some teeth, gets to Iowa for his birthday…..(Shhh, it’s a surprise!)  He is certainly not a picky eater, but it makes me happy to think that he would pick my cookies over a store-bought….especially when they are warm out of the oven.  This blog post (#2 so far) is dedicated to him, for his birthday.  Just in case cookies aren’t enough. 🙂

Store-bought cookies are all fairly uniform.  There are almost always none with more chocolate chips than the others…. This can be a pro sometimes, but it makes them less unique.  And you can’t make a ‘custom’ choice when taking a cookie out of the container.

Those are my pros and cons for cookies of both kinds.  Maybe you enjoyed reading it, or maybe you’re just really hating me right now because you want a cookie and you don’t care what type it is.  😛

I won’t put a picture on here, just in case you haven’t eaten yet!

Have a great day, and thanks for reading!!!
